Using mixture fuels of alcohols and diesel fuel can reduce the smoke emission of diesel engine, but it is very difficult that methyl alcohol mix with diesel fuel and ethyl alcohol can mix with diesel fuel provided there is little water in ethanol. So some additives should be added to enhance the mixture fuel stability of alcohols with diesel fuel. Additives and the effect of water on mixture fuel of alcohols and diesel fuel are the current hotspots on emulsion fuel study.In this paper, according to the thermodynamic stabilization of mixture fuels of diesel fuel and alcohols(sometimes with water), they can be divided into two classes. One is thermodynamic stable system and the other is thermodynamic unstable system .(1) Thermodynamic stable system: In this part, many experiments have been done in order to get the data of alcohols' soluble capacity in diesel fuel, the solubilizing power of some solubilizing agents, the effects of surfactants' HLB number and water on the mixture fuel stability .(2) Thermodynamic unstable system: Using mechanical churn up method and surfactants, diesel fuel and alcohols(sometimes with water) can be emulsified. In this part, the optimum HLB number and the delamination period, related to the scale of water in mixture fuel, are studied.Based on the above work, we get a comparatively cheap alcohol-water -diesel emulsion fuel which has a delamination period amounts to 14 days. At last, the physical and chemical characteristics of the emulsion diesel fuel is studied and analyzed.
