The Vortex-excited Oscillation, Wake Galloping, Rain-Wind Vibration and Buffetting are the main cause of the fatigue in the vicinity of the anchorages on cables of Cable Stayed Bridges. The large amplitude of the cables vibration also makes passengers feel uncomfortable and have a suspicion of the bridge's insurability. With the increase of the span length, more and more long, slim cables are used in the cable-stayed bridges. The vibration of cables that induced by wind has turned out to be a significant obstacle to the development of cable-stayed bridges to be lighter and span larger. In recent years, engineers have provided many countermeasures to control the vibration, including attaching dampers on cables. A new type of damper using High Damping Rubber is designed in this paper. The characteristic of the High Damping Rubber and the application of the damper on cables are discussed. Design method of the HDR damper is also provided in this paper.
