With the development of electric power industry and the improvement of the demand to power supply quality by consumers, the power quality monitoring technology is facing a new challenge. This thesis focuses on the application of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) technology in the field of power quality monitoring. At first, the thesis discusses the hardware implementing arithmetic of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and some correlative problems need to be solved. And according to the thesis' design demand and characteristic of large-scale Programmable Logic Device (PLD), the thesis designs an implementing scheme of FFT processing machine based on PLD. On the base of it, a piece of data collection special chip with a core of FFT is designed with VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) in the way of Top Down system design method, which can finish harmonic analysis and measure the voltage, current, frequency and power of the electric power system. After that, the function of the data collection special chip is implemented with Field Programmable Gates Array (FPGA), and is tested successfully. An example on the application of the special chip in the power system is provided in the end of the thesis. The result of simulation and experiment shows that the data collection special chip can be used in the power quality monitoring system, and it can improve the real-time performance and the reliability of the system.
