Coordinates measurement technology is playing more and more important role in modern industry and has been become one of important components of CIMS. As the development of Virtual Manufacturing and other advanced manufacturing concept, the Virtual Coordinates Measurement Machine (VCMM) is proposed. It is a significant technology for CIMS, Concurrent Engineering and Virtual Manufacturing, and provides an effective tools for implementation of Computer Aided Inspection Planning (CAIP). It is also a practical technology to shorten the cycle of inspection, improve efficiency of CMM, reduce inspection cost, avoid probe damage caused by error operation during inspection and determine optimum inspection scheme. The aims of this thesis are to research on the applications of VCMM in part inspection and some key technologies in inspection planning, involving probe selection, probing scheme, feature definition and measuring program generation, collision avoidance and inspection path planning, etc. The thesis focuses on the measurement of parts with typical geometric features or freeform surface using the software of Cimstation Inspection. The contents of the thesis are as follows:1. The basic functions and their applications of Cimstation Inspection are briefly introduced,2. The file structure of DIMS is analyzed and the specifications of DIMS file format and the programming environment of DMIS are introduced. Several issues are discussed in detail including coordinates system selection of part, probe selection and accessibility analysis, the criteria for the determination of number and distribution of measuring points, the simulation of measuring process, collision detection and avoidance, and inspection path planning.3. The thesis focuses on research of methods for inspection path planning, and several methods for selecting connecting points between inspection sections have been proposed, which make a good balance between global optimum and local optimum for inspection path. For the typical parts, the simulation process has been implement with the VCMM.4. For complex freeform surface, the thesis describes in detail about the inspection methods of curved surface, probing scheme, the radius compensation of probe and the tolerance evaluation of urface inspection. It also mainly discusses thedetermination of number of measuring points, the self-adaptive distribution of measuring points on the curve of cross-section. For the example of lamina, the result of calculation is simulated with the software of Cimstation Inspection. Finally, the state of arts and prospect of VCMM are surveyed.
