The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of the viscous shearing damper used to control the vibration of cables of the cable stayed-bridge. First, the common phenomenon and characteristics of the wind-induced vibration is described. Then, the classification of damp and the mechanism by which damp can diminish the vibration is introduced. According to the research status quo to control the vibration of cables, this paper takes advantage of finite element method to illustrate the effectiveness of viscous shearing damper. The work is based on the theory of complex-eigenvalue. Then, the influence of the damp, stiffness and position of viscous shearing damper on the effectiveness of viscous shearing damper is analyzed. Afterwards, we take sag of cables into consideration and investigate the effect of the sag of cables on the effectiveness of viscous shearing damper. Finally, experiments are carried out on Jun Shan bridge and Bai Sha Zhou bridge to testify the effect of viscous shearing damper and the feasibility of the finite element method and Galerkin approach to analyze the effectiveness of viscous shearing damper.
