Observing the tide of square's construction in China, it clearly shows that this not only reflects the trend of life style from material to spirit, also is a kind of new culture phenomenon. The regrettable situation is that the square doesn't make itself contact with the people's life activity or existence, but just be used as a product or art article because of losing the essential contact with life and its culture source. However, to realize the concern and respect with people, the square should be endowed with strong corpus consciousness and humanities spirit, and also when it were put in cultural structure and cultural background, proceed on the cultural level, the square would reveal its essential contradiction and real problem, and also then would be hold its right direction on the whole.Therefore, based on the organism relation between people and culture, firstly from the history, this paper analyzes the square's meaning for public life in city and its functions, summarizing the different social culture factors in different background toward the square's different appearance. At the same time, because the square originates in the western countries, rather than Chinese tradition building type, this paper analyzes the western culture factors in square design which are reflected in the square forms, comparing with the culture factors in the Chinese traditional courtyard space which is similar to the western square in order to find out the difference and the similar between two types, to guide the cultural meaning of contemporary Chinese square. Based on the context, this paper inquires into the constructive method of the square cultural meaning followed by three levels of culturalstructure-material level, behavior level and spirit level.It not only analyzes the material elements of the square to revealthe cultural factors where contain, but also from the humanized angle, analyzes the restrictive and interactive relation between the people's behavior mental and the space environment of square, to emphasize the importance of humanized principle for the square space. Finally, this paper points out the essential problem of lacking the culture meaning in the tide of square's construction in China, the widespread principle that the square's development should follow and the related countermeasure of Overcoming these defects through analyzing using the semeiology in the square itself, the organic contact between the square and the architecture group, and the function in city cultural context.
