This paper presented a lumped-parameter model for planetary gears, including mesh stiffness variation. The effects of design parameter changes were investigated on system natural frequence and vibration modes. Using method of modes accumulation and continuity of displacements and velocities of components in mesh stiffness change, System vibration was calculated. The investigate characteristic of system vibration and effects of contact ratio, gear number on dynamic mesh force were discussed. Rotational modes are independent of the transverse support stiffnesses of the carrier, ring gear, and sun gear. Translation modes are similarly independent of the rotational support stiffnesses. Large contact ratio do not mean lower mesh force. If either the number of sun or ring gear is not multiple of planet gear, system will run effectively, with lower impaction of tooth mesh in and out.
