With the development of national economy, power system, which supplies society with important energy, is required to provide better service .As a part of power system, power distribution system play a cache's part between power production and power consumption. The statistics show that more than 80% letting off customer is leaded by distribution network fault. So further research on this field is very important in not only theory but also practice. This thesis does some important study on reliability and configuration of distribution system. In the study of power distribution system reliability, two methods are given. One is the development of reliability evaluation using VB which based on the layer of network and recursive arithmetic. According to the layer, distribution systems were stored like directory tree structure. Then, using recursive arithmetic calculated reliability indices for directory tree, the method was realized by VB program; the other is a method of reliability evaluation by interval arithmetic, Which is the use of interval arithmetic to evaluate reliability, and the computation theory is also given. During the calculation, interval number replaced the component' s parameter and it takes into consideration the uncertainty of all of the parameters. In the study of power distribution system configuration, a new configuration model is set up which takes into account simultaneously the losses minimization and system reliability, then improved genetic arithmetic is described detail and of advantage for solving this problem. Several sample tests show that the proposed algorithms are of good performances.
