This paper introduces a numerical method for analyzing the pro-heating effect on the new coal bed at the forepart of the boiler chain under the design or reconstruction of the arch. The 3-D radiation heat transfer in the boiler combustor is mainly studied, and the heat transfer process that occurs between the coal bed on the chain and the arches is dealt with. This paper utilizes commercial software FLUENT6.0 to calculate the velocity, temperature field and wall temperature at the prescribed boundary conditions. FLUENT accurately simulates the variation of fluid field by using finite volume method. On the basis of conservation laws several models are applied: it adopts the standard - two-equations model to simulate the turbulence process of gas-phase , and uses the discrete coordinate model to simulate the thermal radiation effect. The temperature distribution of the new coal bed under the different structural parameters of the boiler hearth is obtained. The results have been compared with the results of the temperature distribution. The influence of the different structural parameters of the boiler hearth on the pro-heating effect of coal bed is analyzed. Therefore an optimized project of a chain boiler is put forward according to the conclusions and experience of boiler design. At the same time, it provides an optimized project for the reconstruction of the arch too.
