Viscous Damping Walls is a new type dissipation energy structure developed by Japanese scholar in 1986. The VDW dissipate energy with damping force provided by steel plate's moving in steel groove in which filled with high viscidity fluid. Base Isolated structure and VDW are both concept of passive control. This paper applies base isolation and viscous damping walls to the frame structure that is uncontrolled and studies the stochastic response and dynamic reliability of two types of passive control structure.Employing double-filter white noise simulates the ground motion acceleration and describing the story hysteretic drift with Bouc-Wen model, the structure's response to the random vibration can be obtained using pseudo-excitation method after equivalent linearization of hysteretic system. Using double parameters of ultimate story drift and hysteretic energy, function equation is established, and failure probability is obtained. Analysis program for random response is worked out with Matlab software.Random response and Dynamic reliability of base isolation structure are calculated. Because isolation parameters take a different effect on failure probability of every parts of structure, a range of optimum stiffness and damping ratio is suggested based on vector minimization of failure probability of both super structure and isolation system.This paper gives a design method for viscous damping walls, derives the motion equation of frame-vdw structure, and studies the random response and dynamic probability of the structure.The last, the energy dissipation ability of two types passive control structure are compared.There are some concludes from analysis of numerical example. Compare with the uncontrolled structure, isolated structure and frame-vdw have a good control effect. Isolated structure is suitable for the lower and more rigid structures, and vdw is more suitable for the higher, flexible structures.
