Product Data Management ( PDM) is a platform supporting product lifecycle of design and manufacturing and plays an important role in contemporary integrated manufacturing system (CIMS) . Workflow management technology in PDM system is an enabling technology used in modern manufacturing enterprises to carry out the stratagem of distributed web-based manufacturing, and manages and optimizes business process efficiently. The research of workflow can shorten the product developing cycle, reduce the cost, improve the quality and finally win competition in the global market.Based on the analysis of the features of PDM system and the functions of workflow management system, a framework of workflow management system for PDM product development environment is set up in this paper by using object-oriented technology.According to the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC) process definition meta-model, a graphic process-modeling tool based on task drive is proposed and developed. The graph handling of workflow model is introduced in particular.Workflow executing service is the core of workflow management system responsible for the runtime control of workflow management system. In this paper a layered model of workflow engine is set up and the architecture of it based on DCOM is established. Moreover sequence diagram for the states of crucial objects is also given out.According to aforementioned research, a workflow management system in PDM environment is realized at the end.
