The reinforcement of the primary members of bridges is one of the effective ways of bridge strengthening. There are lots of ways of strengthening, such as the traditional strengthening method of enlargement of main girder, reinforcement with bonding steel plates, changing of the mechanical system and reinforcement with prestressing technique. In this paper, a new strengthening method of shotcrete is put forward, on the background of the practical strengthening project of Wuhan-Huangshi Expressway. Combined with the development of techniques of reinforcement with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), a further study is done. The method of reinforcement with bonding steel plates is alsostudied for comparison.Firstly, according to the mechanical characteristics of reinforcement with CFRP. reinforcement with bonding steel plates and reinforcement with shotcrete, three failure models are established respectively. Secondly, calculating methods of ultimate bending strength, delayed strain, maximal and minimal amount of reinforcement materials are put forward correspondingly. Finally, three calculating methods of deflection, which are finite-element method, quasi-code method and formula method based on the theory of mechanics of materials, are also put forward. All of the calculating methods mentioned above are tested and verified in practical applications. The research results can used to give reference to the application and research of the above bridge reinforcement ways.
