The purpose of this paper is researching on the application of CAD(Computer-Aided Design) techenology in reinforced conctrete beam and column design, and then developing the CAD system for RC beam and column. The CAD system for RC beam and column is a sub-system of PKPM series software which is developed by China Academy of Building Reaserch. This system performs designing of reinforcement detail in RC members, and provides several methods to making the working drawing of RC beams and columns.By analyzing the structure of working drawing modules in the PKPM 2004 version, general design and module design is carried out in development of CAD system for RC beam & column. The system is successfully developed according to ascertaining data objects and module relations,absorbing results of previous research projects,and using mixed-language of C++ and Fortran based on the CFG graphical plateform.This paper consists of general contents followed by sections on:1) The requirement analysis of the system.The CAD system for RC beam&column is based on the CFG graphical platform. The CFG platform programming in C++ and Fortran mixed language, so this section discusses features of C++ language and Fortran language and reviews some basic technical concepts of mixed-language programming. This section also introduces the COM technique because COM components are used in the software. Besides these above, the system function requirement is defined in this section as well, after researching on the features of designing RC member details.2) Function design, module design and data structure design of the system.According to the requirement analysis, the system can be divided into 4 modules: the module of grouping members, the module of designing bar details, the module of making working drawings, and the module of user interactive. This section introduces the functions and demonstrates the flow charts of these modules. The layered data structure is also introduced in this section.3) Implementation of the module of designing bar details.The module of designing bar details oriented implement to RC member objects instead of working drawings. The unified designing module replaces the designing module in plan and the designing module in elevation, which are the modules in PKPM 2004 version. The new module saves bar data in one file,insures the consistency of bar details.4) Implementation of the module of making working drawings and the interactive module. The drawing module is designed on the base of monolithic plan drawing. Users can modifythe reinforcement in one drawing, this simplified the operation. Drawings made by the system accord with specifications of Chinese Standard for Structural Drawings. The module of user interactive is implemented in MFC application framework, using event-driven technique.The CAD system for RC beam and column has beaen applied to many practical projects, which showed its application properties.
