With some shortcoming and deficiency of semi-rigid asphalt pavement, which results in its early failure. Therefore, the flexible base for asphalt pavement has been regarded by our highway researchers.In order to resolve these problems mentioned above, the typical pavement structures of South Africa are introduced into scientificly after the 22nd world road congress. In South Africa, semi-rigid base is used as the sub-base. At the same time, the structure( 5cm asphalt pavement surface + 15cm graded aggregate base +25~40cm cement-stabilized gravel sub-base) is the most extensive in South Africa. Firstly, the paper studys the typical pavement structure of South Africa including design method of asphalt pavement, grading limits of materials and design parameter on the base of the investigation of road traffic and pavement structure in the region of Pingdingshan. Secondly, graded aggregate has excellent performance in reflection cracks and drainage in stress intensity factor and coefficient of permeability in the support of the theory analysis and laboratory test, at the same time subsurface drainage system is designed. Thirdly, the design method of our country, foreign design method (AASHTO, Shell) focus on analyzing and calculating the typical pavement structures. At last, On the base of theory study, the type of pavement structure and design parameter are used in the region of Pingdingshan.
