The phenomenon of vehicle bump at either end of a bridge is one of familiar highway distress and a difficult problem puzzling engineers for many years. It is caused by the differential settlement between bridge abutment and subgrade. As a result, it badly affects comfort of traveling, reduces velocity of steering, minishes capacity of highway, enhances the damage to vehicles and bridge abutment, and even gives birth to traffic accident. In addition, so much maintenance of surface at the end of bridge not only expends a great deal of labour power, material resources and money, but has bad influence to society.On the basis of reasons of subgrade settlement in transition zone at bridge head, the paper analyses all possible factors affecting differential settlement and computes by finite element method which establishes a three -dimensional space model. The computational results indicate that no enough compaction to fill materials and inadequate bearing capacity of foundation under subgrade are main reasons of vehicle bump at bridge head . Thus strictly controlling the degree of compaction of embankment and ensuring enough bearing capacity of foundation at bridge head are efficient measures preventing vehicle bump at the end of bridge. Furthermore, with the combination of engineering practice, the paper suggests two technical indexes: the length of transition zone adjoining the bridge abutment and the minimal permitting modulus of deformation of foundation under subgrade. In the end, the paper gives a technical analysis on usual measurements of prevention and cure.
