The phenomenon of vehicle bump at either end of a bridge is one of familiar highway distress and a difficult problem puzzling engineers for many years, which is caused by the differential settlement between bridge abutment and sub grade.Based on a large amount of reference to literatures and data at home and abroad and combined with the treatment to behind abutment in Jiangsu Province Road project, this paper analyzes the harmfulness of abutment; Through investigations of transition sections at bridgehead , the reason of abutment bump is analyzed. Longitudinal gradient change, slab staggering and depression, transversal slope are three manifestation of non-uniform settlement. According to the style of non-uniform settlement, mechanism of abutment bump is analyzed. ; Theoretical analysis shows that foundation deformation settlement and deformation compress of embankment fillings are two parts of embankment settlement of behind abutment, and calculation methods of the two deformation settlement are derivated. The relatonship between degree of compaction, depth of fill and settlement is researched; Combined with the filler in XuZhou area and base on the basic performance research on cement, fly-ash, and other material, orthogonal design method and hriqueuina test were used to determinate several fluid state fly-ash cement with good strength and fluidity, which provide foundations for project application. The backfill material has a Good technical and economic benefit. On this base, integrated control techniques to abutment bump are researched at aspects of foundation treatment, embankment and pavement treatment of behind abutment and drainage measures, etc.
