The double-curved arch bridge has been extensively built all over the country, after it was firstly built in 1964. During the application, some diseases and damage have come into being and the loading problem of the existing double-curved arch bridge is also paid attention to. Therefore, it is necessary to have an assessment of the ultimate load carrying capacity of the bridges by theories and load experiments so as to provide a suggestion to the modification works.Depending on the project of the evaluation of the ultimate load carrying capacity of the Shentun Bridge, the structural characters and the chief elements that result the damage are analyzed in the Paper. According to he theory of the ultimate load carrying capacity, the three-span finite element method is built with the help of ANSYS .Loads are carried in the control locations such as the arch ends, the arch crowns, the one-fourth points of arch rib by steps to have a research of the ultimate load carrying capacity. The factors such as temperature and the loading locations are involved separately in the Paper which can have an effect of the ultimate load carrying capacity, so as to get a systematic research and have a compared analysis so as to get a systematic research and have a compared analysis. The results show that reducing the temperature has an clear effect on the ultimate load carrying capacity of the double-curved arch bridge. After the static load test of the the ShentunBridge, the research about the accuracy and the reliability of the finite element method is carried on .A conclusion is drawn that the bridge can not satisfy the requirement of the load and should be reinforced on the basis of the above works. The Paper also gives a reference to the assessment of the bridge of the same structure.
