This paper mainly presents detailed results on the shear resistance of cold-formed steel stud walls in low-rise residential structures by tests and nonlinear finite element analysis based on consulting a lot of documents. The shear resistance of cold-formed steel stud walls under monotonic and cyclic loads is tested in this paper. The test models, including walls with single-gypsum, or walls with single oriented strand board sheathing, and walls with gypsum sheathing on the back and oriented strand board on the face, are made in full scale of engineering project. The trial devices, test method and full test course as well as the analysis of test data are introduced in detail in this paper. Test results show that sheathings influence wall's shear resistance greater, wall's shear resistance under cyclic load is lower than that under monotonic load, wall under vertical load has higher shear resistance than others without vertical load. The shear behaviour of self-tapping screw connection is also tested in this paper, test results show that screw connection's capacity is mainly controlled by sheathing's bearing strength.Nonlinear finite element analysis involving geometric large deformation and materials nonlinear is used to simulate test walls under monotonic load in this paper. Members are modeled as shell elements. The steel members are simply connected. The screws connecting of the sheathings to the frame are modeled through coupling methods. The equation resolution method is selected by ANSYS program automatically. The finite element analysis results are close to that of tests, So the finite element analysis method is correct. There are followed by a detailed parametric study using nonlinear finite element analyse. The results of finite element analyse show that the strength of steel members influences the shear resistance of walls lightly. With the decrease of stud spacing and height, screws spacing, the wall's load capacity increases obviously.
