The fast development of communication, electric power, and commerce asks for more reliable and safer power sources. Batteries, as well known for energy storage devices, are widely used in these areas to provide stable power supply. Valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries are more welcomed in recent years because they require less maintenance (such as water addition etc.), the installation direction is not restricted, and they offer a longer lifetime. Though, several problem must be dealt with when using the VRLA battery, for example, battery charging/discharging control, battery condition determination, cycle life prediction and so on. For these reasons, a VRLA battery management system is highly needed to enhance the performance of the batteries. This thesis discusses the possible problems induced in using VRLA batteries, and accordingly explains how a battery management operates to tackle these problems. Among these problems, charging control is much critical with the batteries' performance. Since pulse charging has its advantage, this thesis focuses on the influence of capacity and cycle lifetime of batteries under pulse charging. A pulse current parameter optimization method based on Mas theory and variable pulse width charging strategy are proposed and experimentally verified by a lab made pulse charger for a 48V VRLA battery pack. Both the hardware and the software design procedures are presented also.
