With the increasing of traffic volume, axle loads, over loading and traffic channelization, serious rutting occurred on the heavy-duty asphalt pavements after opening to the traffic, and the rutting of asphalt pavement is close related to the anti-shear characteristics of asphalt mixture. In addition to the load and environment factors, the materials and the pavement structures will affect the asphalt pavement to anti-shear. It is very necessary to the asphalt materials and structures design. In this paper, a kind of direct shear apparatus with the simple principle, operation and date collection is developed to study on anti-shear characteristics of asphalt mixture and pavement for asphalt material and structure design. And the method and main parameters of the direct shear experiment is studied The anti-shear characteristics of asphalt mixture with different gradations, asphalt contents, temperatures and load speed are studied. Through comparing to the anti- shear characteristics of asphalt mixture with the rutting test results, and find out that the anti- shear index can reflect the anti- rutting characteristics of asphalt mixtures. The C and Φ value of asphalt mixtures can easily calculate out according to compression strength and splitting strength. The anti- shear characteristics of different asphalt tack coats were also studied by the direct shear apparatus in this paper, and the results show that the shear strength of different asphalt tack coats were affect by the asphalt tack coats contents, SBR modified asphalt is the best material of asphalt tack coats. At last, the anti- shear design method of asphalt pavement are put forward. And the anti- shear performance of a asphalt pavement was analyzed by using the methord.
