For the majority of ammeters, the record and charge management of the electricityconsumption is all to depend on the manual methods. To improve the present backwardcondition, an automatic reading system of ammeter with CCD has been developed so thatammeter can be automatically read by applying image processing technique, which iscompletely new in our country at present.This paper, after discussing the basic theory and the application of digital imageprocessing and analyzing the concrete characteristics of the ammeter, designs thesoftware and hardware system through focusing on the design characteristics and theapplication circumstances of the embedded system. The image acquisition system of aportable data acquisition instrument is induced. This paper presents the general characterof CMOS graph sensor and the details of CPLD, discusses the design of image acquisitionwith CPLD. The logic synthesis was used to solve the problem of function simulation andtiming analysis. It improves the efficiency of data collection and reduces CPU designcomplexity by this way.According to the concrete characteristics of the ammeter, this paper puts forwardthe crux algorithm that identifies automatically the position and direction of the pointersof ammeter with techniques of the image preprocessing, image segmentation and imageanalysis and recognition. This dissertation designs the software and hardware systemthrough focusing on the design characteristics and the application circumstances of theembedded system.The application of digital image processing and analyzing the concretecharacteristics of the ammeter, which will have good development prospects, saves timeand improves efficiency without transformation of the existing lines. It can be the goodalternative and the supplementary of the record and charge management of the electricityconsumption.
