The outer space of Buddhist architecture is such a kind of space which is as important as its internal space, and is also a main space manifesting its place spirit. Fujian Buddhist architecture is an important branch of Han Buddhist architecture and has obtained some achievements. But there is no systemic and in-depth research in the outer space of Buddhist architecture so far. This thesis chooses the outer space of Xiamen Buddhist architecture as a research object and analyses its basic style and inscape.Firstly, the special city background of Xiamen Buddhist architecture is introduced, followed by looking back the history of Xiamen Buddhism. Then the type and characteristic of Xiamen Buddhist architecture is introduced in order to give a foundation for the research on its outer space.Secondly, the connotation of Buddhist temple's outer space is taken into investigation from its notional definition,restrictive factor and functional structure, followed by casting by its evolvement. Then the type and characteristic of outer space of Xiamen Buddhist architecture are discussed combining with the practical investigation.Thirdly, in-depth analysis and discuss are carried out by the practical investigation in focus of the six inscapes of outer space of Xiamen Buddhist architecture about interface,place,entrance,passageway,sign and surrounding in order to study the outer space of Buddhist architecture in a micro perspective.Finally, the value of cultural relic about the outer space of Xiamen Buddhist architecture is discussed. Then existent problems of the outer space of Xiamen Buddhist architecture are analyzed by the practical investigation, followed by discussing upon its protection and putting upon its development.
