In the modern China where the economy and society are modernizing,Buddhism architecture is lagging behind the development of the whole social construction industry due to the historical tradition and other factors. And now Buddhist revival, believers growth,Buddhist culture-related activities have become increasingly prosperous and they made a very urgent need for the design and construction of Buddhist architecture. At the same time, the development of form and space of Buddhist architecture that is an important religious building has been influenced by social ideology, social economy, religious ethics, religious aesthetics, government, monks, believers and a series of factors. So,the design is very difficult. But the current construction of the Buddhist temple is in a complex historical turning point, and has not yet been universally recognized design pattern. On the whole, there are many problems, such as over pursuit of grandeur, excessive imitation of the ancient style, lack of features, monotonous space, and unfitness of the modern Buddhism demand, and so on.Therefore, the subject of research is Buddha-hall space in the Buddhist architecture in the Han Area. And it is suggested that the Buddha-hall space and the Buddhist temple space are isomorphic, which is the prerequisite for an in-depth research for Buddha-hall space.Through the basic principles and methods of architecture,cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural comparative research, literature research combined with case study,I conduct a comparative study of the vertical and horizontal of Buddha-hall space relied on the basic research model of “space prototype → prototype memory”.From that,I hope to get inspiration for innovative design of present and future Buddha-hall space, and then get inspiration for design of contemporary Buddhist architecture. The typical composition pattern of Buddha-hall space in the traditional Buddhist temple in the Han Area is clearly presented to the readers in Chapter 2,through the study about the design of Buddha-hall space in the traditional Buddhist temple in the Han Area(mainly from the constituent elements and the creation of space religious atmosphere).Chapter 3 discusses the time background of influencing the development of Buddhist architecture. And then, the design status of Buddha-hall space in contemporary Buddhist architecture in the Han Area is investigated in Chapter 4.From the perspective of cross-cultural comparative study, this paper researches on the design of modern Buddhist architecture in Taiwan and Japan, while providing reference and inspiration for design in Chapter 5.Finally,it is concluded that, functional modernization of Buddha-hall space in contemporary Buddhist architecture in mainland China has begun and matured, while the form is still in the form of conservative and innovative forms of exploration.Contemporary Buddhist architectural design should conform to the development of history and times, attach importance to the design of space elements, and the architect will have a gradually relaxed design. While inheriting the traditional spatial characteristics and spiritual atmosphere,we can use new materials and technology to create new Building vocabulary, shaping the new spiritual space.
