Saving energy is a strategic task in the social and economic development of China. Building up an energy-saving society and promoting sustainable development of economy form the basis of constructing an overall well-off and harmonious society. Air-conditioning units are the dispensible energy-consuming system in modern buildings, which provide people with comfortable life and work environmet while consuming much energy. For solving energy-saving problem of air-conditioning units,in addition to resonably operating exiting air-conditioning units,it is an important task to develop a new refrigerating and air-conditioning style. In recent years, a new type of energy-saving air-conditioning unit consumes only one eighth clectrcity of traditional compression-type central air-conditioner,which is the direct evaporative cooler. This paper introduces the basic principles, present research situation and development of direct evaporative cooling. It also discusses the classification and application of evaporative cooling, the structure characteristics and heat transfer of direct evaporative cooling air-conditioner.A series of related original data are acquired and analyzed through the performance test of direct evaporative cooling air-conditioner in the working site. Finally, through the comparison and analysis of the investment and electricity consuming between direct evaporative cooling air-conditioner and ordinary mechanical refrigerating unit, the paper suggests that in the current energy saving oriented society, it is of great significance both socially and economically adopting direct evaporative cooling air-conditioner.
