Along with the improvement of FACTS technology and the gradual maturity of TCSC especially, the application of TCSC on transmission lines is more and more widespread, and people pay greater and greater attention to the fault location about TCSC transmission lines. For the reason that transmission lines with TCSC always are ultra-high even extra-high voltage, so it is highly important for TCSC transmission lines to quickly and accurately locate faults with aspects to their safe and economical operation when faults occur.Series compensated transmission lines are equipped widely with two-terminal traveling wave fault location devices. To prevent two-terminal traveling wave fault location devices from locating fault unsuccessful for communication dypass or GPS unconventionality, a new method is put forward as backup which uses two-terminal devices to achieve single ended fault location. The presented mothod is simple and credible because the whole location process does not need synchronous data or more equipments, just need add an algorithm. So the application of this method has a bright future. The main research content and achievement of this article are as follows:1. The fault location methods based on fundamental components and traveling wave are generalized in the paper, and especially the sort and theory of fault location based on traveling wave are discussed concernfully. Not only the transmission characteristic of traveling wave on single-phase and multi-phase transmission line but also the refraction and reflection regularity of traveling wave is analyzed, too. On the other hand, the principle and fault location actuality of TCSC are analyzed briefly.2. Through the mathematics model of TCSC The working theory , running characteristic of TCSC and the start-up determinant principle of MOV are discuss detailedly. To study the influence on fault location based on traveling wave by MOV working state, the start-up time of MOV will be validated by the simulation of the electromagnetism transient model of TCSC.3. To study the transient transform characteristic of CVT and TA deeply, the electromagnetism transient models of CVT and TA are established. Then the simulation results will be analyzed. Lastly, the transient characteristic of CVT and TA will be summarized and compared.4. On the basis of particular discussing on the fault point's fault and phase-mode analysis under different fault types, the paper summarizes the characteristic and expression of the primary mode wave, then presents a new fault recognition and phase selection approach which based on mode wave and phase wave. The method uses the ground mode of traveling wave to judge the grounding and non-grounding fault, then selects the fault phase by comparing the polarity of the aerial mode and the ground mode. The simulation shows the approach is simple and reliable. The paper establishs the model of arc faults and simulates the arc fault in TCSC lines. At the same time, the phase-mode transformation and the wavelet analysis are introduced.5. At first, the influence of impulsive corona on fault location is studied in this paper. Them TCSC transmission lines are equipped widely with two-terminal traveling wave fault location devices. To prevent two-terminal traveling wave fault location devices from locating fault unsuccessful for some reason, a new method is put forward as backup which uses two-terminal devices to achieve single ended fault location. If TCSC is located in the end of the transmission line, fault location can be carried on directly by comparing the characteristic of the aerial mode and the ground mode. If TCSC is located in the middle of the transmission line, two fault location will be found. Then the fake fault position can be wiped off by comparing the decay speed of decaying DC components at two-terminal collected fault current traveling waves. The simulation shows the approach is veracity and reliable.6. At last, the feasibility of locating fault in TCSC line by voltage traveling wave is analyzed.
