In recent years, the increase in electricity consumption and the demand for improving power quality is making the electric power system continuously expand its scale, and the topology of the electric power system become more and more complex. On the other hand, as the result of deregulation in power industry, power generation, transmission and distribution are operating in a competitive power market. In addition, the electric power system itself needs to pursue higher operation efficiency due to the competitiveness. These requirements are calling for higher automation of power systems. Therefore, it is necessary to deploy more advanced monitoring and control network to improve the power system automation.Benefited from the fast development of embedded computing technology, modern networking and communication technology, and distributed information processing technology, technology about sensor networks develops rapidly and becomes a hotspot in research. Sensor networks can cooperatively sense, collect, process and publish the information, which is a potentially ideal solution for electric power system distributed networked measurement and data sharing.Based on this background, a research project is initiated, in which smart sensor nodes are deployed at different location of electric power system to perform distributed data measurement and associated calculation. The data gathered are sent to control centre for system analysis and decision-making, implementing the monitoring and control of electric power system security infrastructures.This thesis mainly discusses the design and implementation of the software platform in power system sensor networks. Meanwhile, in order to support the standard entries, the related standards are studied. The software platform design is modular, platform-independent and standardized which simplifies the deployment of sensor networks for electric power system and makes it easier to integrate the system to other system, e.g., IEC 61850. The software platform can also serve as a reference for other applications of sensor network. The thesis starts with the description of the whole architecture of power system sensor network, followed by demand analyses of software. Then, the design and implementation of the software framework and the function modules are described. The developed software platform are tested and simulated. The tests show that the system can achieve desired specifications, and hence verify the correctness and validity of the developed software platform.
