Rainer Ban Beckham And Design Criticism Concept

Peter Reyner Banham (1922-1988) was a renowned design and architecture critic and had been regarded as one of the first design historians. He was a firm modernist, and had made very important contribution to the development of design criticism. His tutor was Nikolaus Pevsner, who was the modern architecture theorist, Charles Jencks who was the leading theorist of post-modernist was Banham's student. Partly, Banhm is a bridge between modernist and post-modernist. So,it is meaningful to study Reyner Banham.There are three chapters in this diploma work, the first chapter makes a short introduction of Banham, discribes his idea and the research situation of Banham.The second chapter discussess the concept of Banham's design criticism from three aspects: modern vs maketplace, hign culture vs popular culture,and the role of criticism.The third chapter analyzes the complicated relationship among Banham,Pevsner and Jencks,we will see the similarities and differences of their concept.
