Castellated steel beams,characterized by rational section form,large flexuralstiffness,high carrying capacity and prominent economic efficiency,and so on,are often used in the projects of workshops,office buildings,high-rise buildings,bridges and steamships.However,the design factors for the member are very complex.In the design process, individual experience greatly works,and there are now no mature norms and standards available in china.Aditionally,the optimization theory and the application of it is currently undergoing something of a boom. However,the potential of structural optimization techniques has not been realized by civil engineering industry and most works are designed by trial and error based on individual engineering experiences.The situation is very negative for our country subject to the relative lack of resources. Under this situation,on the basis of comparative analysis of a large number of the finite element models,by adopting the parameter design method of ANSYS software,the paper combines Specification for Structural Steel Beams with Web Openings published by ASCE,The Specification for Structural Steel Buildings(GB50017-2003),the optimization box of ANSYS and FEM technology,to make a secondary delevopment for the optimum design of the circle-castellated beam or the rectangle-castellated beam which bear uniform or concentrated load and is simply supported.As a result,an optimum design system was work out, which include a standar method and a finite element method.To have the operation easer,this paper designed user interface and developed visual dialogs by UIDL,to realize the visual input of various parameters.On the use of the system,just in accordance with a certain sequence,after entering different parameters in the dialog box to determine the cellular beam model which needs to be optimized,you can get the optimum result which meet various constraints and user specific purpose.The entire operation process is very convenient.It improves greatly the design efficiency and design quality.Finally,the article used an example to show the use of the procedure and verify its practical value.
