With rapid expanding of the scale of the national electric power grids, swift rising of the electric power loads as well as installation of large capability plants, the short circuit level is increasing day after day. How to limit the short circuit current becomes an important technical task during the development of power grids. Therefore, Fault Current Limiter (FCL) has been becoming one of the most popular research subjects nowadays. From the feasibility and economy points of view, Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) and Flexible Short Current Limiter (FSCL) are difficult to apply in electric power grids in the near future. Economical type FCL based on general electric equipments which are un-superconducting or un-electronic is undoubtedly the best choice to solve the questions of limiting fault current. An optimized configuration for the series resonant type FCL based on ZnO arrester is put forward in this article. Also, a 10kV prototype unit has been developed, and the dynamic characteristics have been verified and the feasibility validated, which presents technological basis for further developing higher voltage-level FCLs.An online monitoring, protection and control system is designed in details including both the hardware and software aspects. The system is realized through the hardware module DSP and the software platform LabView. The impact of a FCL on the single-phase autoreclosure scheme of an EHV transmission line is also analyzed in the thesis, in which the secondary arc characteristics are fully accounted for. A new control scheme is proposed and realized to coordinate the operations of both the single-phase autoreclosure and the FCL.
