Newspaper kiosk is vital especial urban architecture to citizen in economic and social life at present in China. It is central research subject for design language how to express impress and mind, convey information of design object on certain form. The fundamental tool of the research about design language is semiotics. A series of operational regulations have been brought forward for many subjects in semiotics, but each subject has its given rules except for these operational ones. Newspaper kiosk possesses architecture essence and sign one at the same time, we can avoid inexplicit defining of concept and application mechanically of theory on in-depth study about sign system of newspaper kiosk and its design language to realize flexible application of theory. Newspaper kiosk has expressed some characteristics of furniture and industrial products as especial urban architecture, the research conclusion of design language of kiosk must be provided with double value of product language and architecture one. The study on design language of kiosk has feasibility because of its simplicity, it must be available to instruct designer to design kiosk.The research approach and consequence in the paper is as follows:Firstly, the essence and characteristics of newspaper kiosk have been clarified, research approach and process of the thesis has been put forward in succession. The kiosk's architecture essence has been expatiated with the theory of deep structure of architecture that has been put forward by Hiller; its sign essence has been affirmed with Saussurean and Morris' semiotics theory. The theory of three function levels-applied function, aesthetic function, connotation function has been put forward about design language, the research process of design language on three function levels has been affirmed.The applied function of newspaper kiosk is composed by kiosk's physical components, is realized by physical attribute and systemic constitution of these components. The sign system on applied function of kiosk presents the characteristic that is similar to the sign system's Double Segment of crude language, The design approach of kiosk taking on primary function can be researched by the theory of structure linguistics. It has been put forward that newspaper kiosk is composed of vocabulary units that have relative integrated applied function in accordance with certain syntax in this paper, distinct kiosk is created through using other vocabulary unit to replace current one in the same aggregate that is composed of congener variant vocabulary units to meet disparate need of operators of kiosks.The aesthetic function of kiosk is aesthete's aesthetic experience that is acquired with aesthete's major perceptive medium-vision, aesthete sometimes can utilize fumbling with hand to assist. The meanings of kiosk' form, color and texture are have been elicited in the paper, it has been brought forward that designer shall design balanced kiosks except for equational ones, exert himself to design modularize kiosk with alternant rhythm, attempt to design kiosk taking on visual expressive force with sharp contrast of texture, area and color of kiosk. It has been affirmed in succession that designers shall avoid gray short tone, adopt form moderate tone, use neatly natural texture and artificial one on the practical need.The connotation function of kiosk is that different aesthetes have experienced diversified especial meanings of design form of kiosk on the diversity of individual mind or other factors. The reading of connotation meaning of kiosk is researched with the theory of film semiotics, it is base on the similarity of experience of enjoying kiosk and seeing a movie. The context effect and acquiring meaning is discussed in this paper, it has been affirmed that the design language of kiosk must accommodate to given civil context and the symbolic meaning of kiosk is unequal with summation of the meanings of all vocabulary units possessing connotation function, the vocabulary units lacked explicit meaning have influence to the connotation meaning of kiosk and let it express new qualities that exceed the summation of meanings of each units possessing meaning. Design syntax of kiosk possessing explicit meaning and according with civil image is clarified with this theory.The feasibility and concrete approach of integrative application of design languages about three function levels is put forward thought in-depth study on design language of each function levels and their academic bases, at the same time, the application of academic production is researched. It is explored how to make full use of architecture signs, color signs, ornament signs and other visual signs taking on national characteristics to design the kiosk that shows unique civil image with integrative application of design languages of three function levels on the research of practical cases.In conclusion, Semiotics is regarded as epistemology and methodology in this paper. We can utilize respectively the theory of structural linguistics and film semiotics, apply subtly relative academic principles of syntactics, semantics and pragmatics to research design language and its application of newspaper kiosk. The application approach of semiotics has been innovated, new rational design approach of newspaper kiosk has been brought forward.
