With the exploitation, the oil content in the oil field is reducing and the water content is increasing. We need an apparatus on measuring the water content in oil, which has high precision, extensive measuring range and low cost is need, and which can be installed at the mouth of every oil well to ensure the high efficient using of every oil well. Although many methods have been used in this field, most of them have the disadvantages, such as narrow measuring range and high cost. These disadvantages induce the unsuitability for the measurement in the oil fields of china, where the oil includes high water content. At the same time, these apparatus can not be used at every well economically for their high cost. In this paper, different methods are comprehensively analyzed and compared. The coaxial cylinder capacitance sensor has been specially introduced and it can be installed in the pipeline directly. The configuration parameter of the coaxial cylinder capacitance sensor has also been designed optimally.The precision and the measuring range of this sensor are influenced by the gas in the liquid, the mixture state and the oil crust on the electrode. In this paper, these influence factors are qualitative and quantitative analyzed. Based on the analysis, a new system on measuring the water content in oil is introduced. This system includes the gas-liquid separator, the liquid mixer, the capacitance sensor, the auto-rinsing configuration and the data collection and wireless remote transmission part. In order to eliminate the low precision and disturbing influences, integrated chip CAV424 is used to collect the data. At the same time, the temperature compensation is made by the temperature sensor. Considering the long distance between the well and the center controller atrocious, GPRS and Electronics Clock are used to transmit the dada timely. With the examination, feasibility of this system has been validated in the laboratory.
