With the development of civil aviation of China, airports' energy demands have increased greatly. For an airport, lighting accounts for a considerable proportion of the entire energy consumption, which can be reduced significantly by applying high efficient light sources. Among all sorts of new light sources, Light Emitting Diode(LED) is most potential for energy saving. LED has a long life, high theoretical efficacy, small size and narrow spectrum, so it is widely used in lots of lighting fields. Great improvement in luminous efficacy and quick drop in price make it possible to apply LED in Airfield Lighting.Airfield lighting system safeguards flight safety when airplane takes off, lands or slides in low visibility conditions or at night. It mainly includes Approach Lighting System, Visual Approach Slope Indicator System, Runway lighting System and Taxiway lighting System.At first, a brief introduction to LED non-imaging optics is presented, which involves features of LED light source, background knowledge of non-imaging optics, general design of a optical system and ray-tracing method. Then, according to requirements of national standards and features of LED light source, a set of optical system for LED Taxiway Centreline Light is built up, which is made up of reflector, diffuser and prism. Models are set up in optical design software Tracepro, and simulations are carried out, results are analyzed and improvements are made to the optical systems. Next, design of electrical driver and luminaries' mechanism are presented. Last, the LED Taxiway Centueline Light is tested with a goniophotometer measurement system and results are analyzed.In this paper, optical system design for LED Taxiway Centreline Light is finished, this system has a strong-built mechanism, long life, and its light outputs meet the requirements of national standards. Compared with conventional lights, this design reduces total power input, thus brings significant saving on energy.
