SAR interferometry (InSAR ) technology uses the phase informationof complex SAR data to get three-dimensional information of the earthsurface. The technology has been in the front line of radar field since lastdecade. In recen years, this technology is introduced to forestry fie1d byabroad scientists and has been widely used in forestry mapping. Now, it isfocused on using SAR ibo techllology to estimate averageheigh of stand, Having considered the advantage of InSAR andchacterishc of woodland, thes study is mauly on using SARinterferOmeny technology to esthae aVerae heigh of stand.In thes thesis, after a brief historical of InSAR review and its mainuse in forestry field, the Principles of SAR interferometry are introduced.The key technques, including motion compensation imageco-registration, baseline estimate, interferogram fiatten Phaseunwrapping etc., are described To the complicated step, i.e. phaseunwrapping, several algorithm are compared and analyzed. Then themethods of estimatin stand heigh are given and penetration model ofmicrowave to forest canopy is established. At lasL SIR-C C-band andL-band SLC data of Daxinganling are processed and estimated standheigh is caculated and analyzed with the field measurements.The main conclusions in this thesis are as follows:(l) An InSAR soforare has been developed on PC platform. It candea1 with most sPacebome SAR SLC data including ERS-l/2, SIR-C,RADARSAT-1, JERS-1.(2) It is potential for InSAR teChnology to esthate effective Standheigh. Stand heigh infwton can be acqulred frOm the digital theemodel (DSM) gained from complex SAN data. If the appearance offorestS is very regular the short wavlengh SAR data can get better result.But if the appearance of forests is irregular, the mor steady result can beget using long wavelength SAR data.(3) Penwton model of Inicrowave to forest canopy is established. Itis well known that microwave can pearee canopy in the certain depth,so only the "effective stand heigh" can be estiInatod from SAR data usingInSAR technology. So the penetration depth shou1d be retrieved.Penetration depth is detennined by dielectric constants of tree'scomponents, the frational volume occupied by the particles, particles'distribution, incidence angle and radar wavelength.(4) Ouly the method of "differential heigh between stand andnearby" is useful now. Other methods, which require accurate GCPsduring InSAR processing, were no useful in this study.(5) Further studies are needed in using SAR interferometrytechnology to estmate stand height.(6) SAR interferometry teclmology can be used to monito standheigh incremen.
