Beta vulgaris var. cicla L. seedlings were treated with different concentrations of seawater, and some physiological and biochemistry changes were studied 20 days after treatment. Beta vulgaris var. cicla L. seedlings can survive and grow when treated with 16.7% and 33.3% seawater, but T-2 seedlings showed some changes in physiological and biochemistry characters. In seawater-free and 33.3% seawater-containing media the width of leaves was decreased by 45%; the length was decreased by 53%; and the thickness was increased by 168%. When treated with 33.3% seawater, the amount of stomata per cm on leaves decreased, at the same time, palisade cells and spongy parenchyma cells were expanded and root hair became shorter and fewer. The dry weight of T-l and T-2 seedlings were decreased by 31% and 55%, with the water concentration increased by 4.6% and 6.9%. In T-l and T-2 seedling, the osmotic pressure of the cells was increased by 25% and 75%. In leaves of T-l and T-2 seedling, the concentration of Proline was increased by 72% and 137%, but the concentration of soluble sugars remained approximately the same. The leakage rate of electrolyte of the leaves of T-l and T-2 was increased by 83% and 130%, which indicated that the function of cell membrane was effected by the treatment. The protein patterns were determined in leaves and roots of T-l andT-2. The results showed that the amount of 24.4kD and 27.0kD protein were increased and the amount of 29.1kD and 29.5kD protein were decreased. The changes of physiological and biochemistry characters of Beta vulgaris var. cicla L. seedlings treated with seawater showed that when grow in seawater-containing media, the seedlings change in these characters to adapt to environment.
