The Three-gorge Reservoir Region is located in the upper part of Yangtze River, whichcovers 19 districts or conuties, namely, Yichang, Xingshan, Zigui, Badong in Hubei province, andWushan, Wuxi, Fengjie, Yunyang, Kaixian, Wanzhou, Zhongxian, Shizhu, Fengdu, Wulong,Fuling, Changshou, Yubei, Banan, Jiangjin, urban district of Chongqing in Chongqingmanicipality. There are rich plant species here, especial abundant in rare and endangered plantsbecause the plants here suffered relatively little from the glacial epoch and places here served asthe refuge for the rare and endangered plants. Furthermore, the Region is one of the three centersfor the gathering of the endemic plant genera in China. There are 62 rare and endangered plantspecies here according to Red List of Plants (1990) and List of national protected wild Plants. With construction of the Three-gorge Dam Project, original habitats of some rare and endangeredplants would be drowned. Factors such as immigrant and construction will accelerate theextinction of such plants in the region. So the protection of the rich biodiversity , especially thoserich rare and endangered plants in the Three-gorge Reservoir Region is highlighted. All the 62 rare and endangered plants in the Three-gorge Reservoir Region were documentedwith the data collected through reference documentation, herbaria, botanical garden and fieldinvestigation. All informations of plants including morphological characters, habit and characters, the value of protection and the distribution of each plant were input into the computer. With thehelp of programs like FrontPage, Dream weaver, Photoshop, Flash and JavaScript we made ahomepage entitled Information system of rare and endangered plants in the Three-GorgeReservoir Region. Then we write it on a CD.The thesis is composed of three parts. The first part introduces the framework, objectvity, methods, purpose of the study and the significance of the study. The basic concepts in protectionof wild plants, advance in biodiversity and biodiversity information system are presented in thesecond part. The last one is the result of study, which includes a information searching systemcovering all the information currently available about the rare and endangered plants in the Three-gorge Reservoir Region.I. At the first section we can see the framework of study and the environment in reservoirRegion. The objectivity, methods, purpose of study and the significance of study are alsopresented.2.From the second part we can know the basic concepts in protection of wild plants such as-4-the concepts concerning rare species, protective plants, endangered species, vulnerary species, endemic plants, biodiversity, biodiversity information system etc. We also introduced the progressin such fields.3.The researching results can be drawn as follows:(I)According to the books Red List of Plants in China and List of National Protected WildPlants, there are totally 62 rare and endangered plant species in the Three-gorge Reservoir Region, which belong to 57 genera of 40 families. Among them there are 6 species of 5 genera in 4families of pteridophyte, l4species of 12 genera in 6 families of gymnosperm and 42 species of 40genera in 30 families of angiosperm. The rare and endangered species of pteridophyte, gymonosperm, and angiosperm here makes up 39.2 %, 23.3 % and 16.0 % respectively of thethree categories of the total rare and endangered plants in China. The species, geographicaldistribution and floristic characteristics and present status for protection of the rare andendangered plants in the Three-gorge Reservoir Region are discussed. Some proposals forprotecting the resources of these plants are presented on the base of analyzing the endangeredcauses and present conditions of natural protection.(2)The Information sy...
