Animal habitats and habitats fragmentation that affect the animal survivorship and their reproduce become the hotspot in landscape ecology. Traditional methods are limited by human abilities, finance and natural environment and so on. Now, more and more ecologists combine the field survey with remote sensing and geographical information technology to research the animal habitats. It became the very important orientation of GIS application.Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (also know as the Yunnan Golden Monkey) is one of endemic animals in our country, and it is one of the world's top 25 most endangered primates. Now it became the flag-species in the three parallel rivers area. All of people were attracted by its living condition, especially ecologists, environmentalists. This animal has very important scientific value. Now 18 communities distribute in Yunling Mountain, the population is about 1000 to 2000. But their habitats were destroied very seriously. In order to protect their habitats effectively, assess the degree of their habitats and plan the habitats based on the fruits of former researcher and landscape ecology by utilizing the advanced techniques (GIS&RS).The dissertation is a part of the national natural science fund project "Habitat fragmentation and restoration of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey". The study area is located in the south of Baima snow mountain natural conservation. Work was base on the former field survey. Vegetation-class was abstracted from the satellite images, and utilized the GIS software such as ARCGIS OR ARCView process geographical information and built the database about the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey's habitats. Assessed its habitats quality base on geographic information, experts' knowledge and by using GIS software it is good at the spatial analysis. On the base of assessment and theories of landscape ecology, the planning about Yunnan snub-nosed monkey's habitats was made, the core area and the corridor were designed. This dissertation is composed of the seven chapters. The first chapter narrate the value of animal habitats and the landscape planning in the conservation, GIS application in the animal protection, Yunnan snub-nosed monkey research background and the value of the article. The second chapter discusses the research methodology (about remote sensing and geographical information system technology), basic information of study area and the research way. The third chapter, according to the assessment theories of wild animal and the habits of the monkey, proposes the method that how to analyze and assess the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey's habitat. The forth chapter tell how to process the data and build the database by GIS software, especially discusses the how to extract the vegetation by using the ERDAS software process the satellite image. In the fifth chapter, assesses the degree of the suitable habitat of the monkey and describe the situation using the landscape index by combining the GIS technology with the experts' knowledge. The sixth chapter disserts the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey's habitat planning (core area and the corridor of the monkey) according to the theories of landscape planning and conservation area planning. The end of dissertation, draws a conclusion of the research.
