Habitat is the natural environment of animals and plants. In recent years, with human acitivities' expansion, the earth's surface form, land cover change, landscape pattern have been changing, which makes the habitat's fragmentation degree strengthened gradually. The habitat's fragmentation is a direct reason that results in the serious reduction of biodiversity. Analyzing the species especially rare species' distribution, habitat requirement, habitat distribution and survival threat, and then caning out habitat evaluation, that is the basis of species' protection. It is difficult to meet the requirement of the habitat changed by using the traditional field survey. However 3S technology provides technological support and study condition for habitat investigation and survey in time. It is an important applying field of Geomatics to cany out wildlife habitat assessment and protection based on field monitoring and 3S technology in recent years.Takin belong to world rare animals and they had been listed in the directory of the first class protection animal in China as early as 1989. Takin live only in the southeast of Asia Takin together with Giant pandas and Gold monkeys are called three rare animals inhabited in alpine mountain forest in China. There are only four subspecies of Tarkin existing now. The B.taxicolor. taxicolor of Takin is one of them and it is mainly living in Gaoligong Mountains in Yunnan Province. With the expansion of human activities, the Takin's habitat pattern has being changed and fragmented which greatly threatens Takin's living, especially threatens those living in the Gaoligong Mountains. The number of Takin is reducing sharply, and its distribution is becoming more and more narrower compared to 70s of 20centure. Therefore, it is of great theory and practice significance to carry out the research on Takin's habitat assessment and protection, based on 3S technology.Under the support of national natural science fund project (No.40361007) " Study on Takin habitat based on 3S technology in Gaoligong Mountains" and the special topic of the National Basic Research of China (No.2003CB415105-10), this dissertation has carried out assessment on Takin habitat in Gaoligong Mountains based on 3S technology. This research has taken northern Gongshan Mountains as study area, where Takin mainly distributes. According to the research of former scholars and field sampling survey result, making quantitatively annalsis to Takin's habitat selection, the factors which influence Takin habitat selection are indentified and the imagine equations of Takin appearance probability is obtained.Then, based on 3S technology, land cover information of study area is extracted. Digital elevation model is established by using topographic maps on the scale of 1:50000, Digital Terrain Model is established by combined DEM, result of field survey and imagine equation.
