Objective:To investigate the relationship between C-reactive protein,Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and BODE index in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Methods:Between December 2008 and December 2009,40 stable COPD patients to recruit at the First Department of Respiratory Medicine, the People's Hospital of Xinjiang Urgur Autonomous Region.we evaluated dyspnoea, assessed by the Modified Medical Research Council (MMRC) scale;degree of airflow obstruction, via FEV1; exercise capacity, using 6-min walk distance (6MWD); body mass index (BMI).then according the criteria computed BODE scores. C-reactive protein,IL-6 levels were measured in these patients and in 40 controls. Studying the relationship between C-reactive protein,IL-6 levels and dyspnoea, FEV1%,6MWD, BMI, BODE scores. After logarithmic transformation of CRP and IL-6,The date were analyzed using a statistical software package(spss 16.0).Results:CRP levels were higher in COPD patients[(4.92±0.47) mg/L] than controls[(2.62±0.16) mg/L].The sputum CRP levels was positively correlated with MMRC scale and BODE scores (r=0.596 via 0.516, respectively p<0.01),negatively correlated with FEV1% and 6MWD (r=-0.495 via-0.455, respectively p<0.01), uncorrelated with BMI(r=0.19, p>0.05).IL-6 levels were higher in COPD patients[4.25 (3.33~5.1) pg/ml]than controls[2.35 (1.62~3.45) pg/ml].The sputum IL-6 levels was positively correlated with MMRC scale and BODE scores (r=0.627 via 0.517, respectively p<0.01),negatively correlated with FEV1% and 6MWD (r=-0.499 via-0.592, respectively p<0.01),uncorrelated with BMI(r=0.019,p=0.91).Conclusions:CRP and IL-6 levels were higher in stable COPD patients and can represent systemic inflammation to some degree. CRP and IL-6 levels were correlated with symptoms, physiologic changes and exercise ability. This should be considered when CRP and IL-6 levels are measured in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.compaired with CRP, IL-6 more correlated with FEV1%,6MWD,MMRC scale and BODE scores.
