Research purposesTo evaluate the comprehensive benefit of a hospital in Shenzhen. To summarize the changes of this hospital in resource collocation, medical services, financial and social performance from 2005 to 2007. Meanwhile, we give comprehensive evaluation of all the indicators from 2005 to 2007. To find out the main problems of hospital's development, and reflect the operation and management of the hospital accurately. To provide statistical basis for hospital development plan.Research methodsUsing a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. First of all, built a system-level framework, which is based on the use of literature and experience, and includes representative, overall level and simple indicators. Secondly, conducted the descriptive analysis to summarize the status of the hospital and the classification of effective indicators. Third, applied principal component analysis, the Composite Index and TOPSIS to evaluate the synthetic benefit of the hospital indicators from 2005 to 2007.ResultsHospital Status: Equipped with advanced medical equipments, This hospital is one of the earliest 3A (CLASS 3/GRADE A) hospitals in ShenZhen which attached great importance to the construction of teaching and research work.Assorted benefit evaluation: In the respect of resource allocation, the total number of hospital workers is increasing year by year. By 2007, the total number of health staff has reached 2757, more than 800 people increased in 2 years. The number of health technicians in 2007 was 2104, and the number of health managers in 2007 was increased to 158. Both of the two data were the highest value of three years. At the same time, indicators of permanent assets, permanent assets per bed, construction area per bed were also increased in the past three years; In medical services, the analysis revealed that the services of the clinics of the hospital has maintained at stable and higher level. Some efficiency indicators, including the average working day per bed, turnover of beds, and utilization of beds, showed that there are excessive use of the hospital's beds, and the proportion of increasing inpatients has been trend upward. In economic benefits, the total revenue, income and charge of prescription and medical were declining in 2006. But in 2007, the charge of prescription has a substantial increase while medical costs per-bed was declined. The peak of the proportion that medication costs in out-patient costs also appeared in 2007. In Social benefits, the satisfaction score of this hospital in 2005, 2006 and 2007 were 85.05, 85.42, 85.97 respectively. There are 33 2A/3A hospitals in ShenZhen, and the rank of the hospital is 15, 25, 23.Evaluation synthetic benefit: Through the TOPSIS, principal component analysis and a comprehensive index method, we can get the changes of comprehensive evaluation of the hospital from 2005 to 2007. The results are approximately in accordance with the practical case: from 2005 to 2007, the hospital continuously improved the comprehensive benefit. Performance in 2007 ranked the highest.Although the comprehensive benefit of this hospital is rising from 2005~2007, but compared with the other 3A hospitals in ShenZhen, its ranking has been declining, which means the development of this hospital is slow. Conclusions and SuggestionsThe established indexes system is effective, and scientific. The current situation of the hospital is good. Based on the classify benefits analysis of 2005-2007's data about resources allocation, medical services, economic benefits and social benefits, we can see that 2007 is the best performance year. At the same time, the evaluating result of comprehensive benefit also shows that this hospital performance the best comprehensive benefits in 2007, in accordance with the actual situation. The analysis result shows that, if this hospital wants to have long-term development of comprehensive benefits, it is necessary to do the following: (1)Optimize the structure of human and material resources, pay attention to both scale building and content building. (2) Raise the level of medical services from health care quality and efficiency. (3) Try the best to achieve the economic benefits of the hospital (4) Adapt to the changes of physician-patient relationship, provide medical services for the patient's satisfaction (5) Creating innovative development strategy for the hospital to improve the synthetic benefits of the hospital in the future.
