Based on Liu Bannong's modern verse, composed by famous composer and linguist Zhao Yuanren, whose representative vocal "How Can I Help but Think of You" is among the earliest art songs in China. The lyrics take advantage of a scene to express one's emotion with descriptive imago.Kind and implicit, the music exquisitely depicts the protagonist's psychic changes under different circumstances, and expresses the loving thought of his lover. The work reflects the youth's pursuit of clinging and sterling love in the streams of breaking free from feudal ethical codes and pursuing personality liberation in May Fourth Movement. It's a perfect combination of music and poetry, which has been circulated and sung for over a century. As a singer, the writer analyzes and studies the historical background, cultural connotation, artistic characteristics of the song as well as the control of feelings, emotions, breath and dynamics when performing it, so as to provide other performers an accurate control of the keynote, style and artistic conception. Thus full passion can be right mingled into the song, true emotions represented by the singing, the connotation perfectly expressed and artistic beauty truly embodied.
