Tender Is the Night is the work created by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1934 which is tinted with the author's reflection on the relationship among the individual, the society, and the universe. This paper examines the tragic meaning of the novel based on Nietzsche's philosophy so as to explore the significance of survival. This paper explores the novel from the perspectives such as the character's duel image, Dick's attitude towards tragic life and his eventual tragic fate. The significance latent in the novel, especially the tragic spirit overflowing through the novel is found to be connected to the tragic philosophy put forward by Nietzsche. The duel image is the case well in point in displaying the tragic hero with Apollonian and Dionysian spirit. Both of the spirits are the demonstration of the passion to affirm the meaning of surviving. Dick's attitude intensifies his determination to be affirmer of the survival. The eternal recurrence can be used to explain that Dick's tragic fate is part of the universe and numerous annihilations of tragic hero compose the eternity of the human being's life force.Through the examination of the tragic spirit of the novel with the philosophy on tragedy, the paper connects the bridge between the novel and the philosophical theory to explore the realistic significance in the novel—to affirm the beauty of human beings'life in the eternal universe.
