The Han bamboo-slip Analects of Dingzhou was excavated from the tomb of Liu Xiu, the King Huai of Zhongshan in 1973, and it was publicized and issued by Cultural Relic Publishing House in 1997. As it is the earliest handwritten copy released for the present, it has drawn attention of many scholars who are devoted to the research. But most of scholars subjectively assume that the Han bamboo-slip Analects was written in the initial period of Han Dynasty, when there were Qi Version, Lu Version and the Old Version. It is difficult to reach an agreement on which type of version the Han bamboo-slip Analects belongs to. Therefore, they have to exert immense efforts to do further examination. In fact, judged from the chapter, diction and transcription, it is supposed to be the product of the Age of Hangaozu. At that time, the Old Version hadn't been discovered, but Qi Version, Lu Version and other Versions had been already popularized, and probable had Already had their respective version systems. In view of the popularization of Analects in the initial period of Han Dynasty and through survey of the similarities and differences between the Han bamboo-slip Analects of Dingzhou and the three Versions, we recognize the Han bamboo-slip Analects of Dingzhou as a mixed handwritten copy outside of the three Versions. To compare the Han bamboo-slip Analects of Dingzhou with the present copy, we find little divergence in general but much likeness in textual structure except a few differences in character. These differences results from two main sources: one is the transcription error, causal missing, abbreviation or wrong derivation, and the other is a proliferous use of interchangeable Chinese characters and modal particles Therefore, the Han bamboo-slip Analects of Dingzhou should be preferentially treated as a mixed folk recital version for oral transcription, which can reflect some original appearance of the Analects in the initial period of Han Dynasty.
