Mr. Huang Gaoxin is an outstanding translator in China today, whose translation involves fiction, fable and poetry. However, his main achievements in translation lie in the translation of poetry. Therefore, this study of Huang Gaoxin focuses on his poetry translation. As an important component of literary translation, poetry translation, especially metrical poetry translation has been an issue with conflicts. This thesis proves the feasibility of the metric poetry based on Huang Gaoxin's translation background, views, strategies and practice. It holds that Huang's strategy of Three Considerations, which is based on the substituting pause for foot, is effective in Chinese translation of English poetry and beneficial to the improvement of the quality and quantity of the translated poetry. This thesis consists of 6 chapters:Chapter One mainly introduces the research background, questions, methodology, significance and theoretical framework of the thesis. As a non-poet translator, Huang achieves huge success in Chinese translation of English poetry through his arduous labor, but his translation strategies have a mixed reception among scholars and translators. In view of this, this thesis will discuss his translation views and practice under the theory of domestication and foreignization.Chapter Two retrospects Huang Gaoxin's life and accomplishments in poetry translation and analyzes Huang's translation views: Poetry translation is conditional, i.e. not every English poem can be translated into Chinese; non-poet translators do not necessarily translate poetry unsuccessfully; and poet-translators do not necessarily translate poetry successfully.Chapter Three mainly discusses Huang's specific translation strategies. It includes the development and orientation of Three Considerations, the quantification of Chinese translation of English poetry, the revision and criticism of poetry translation.Chapter Four is a case study. This thesis, under the guidance of domestication and foreignization theory, makes a research of Huang's translation views and strategies in light of the English version and Chinese version of The Rubáiyát, and concludes that Huang's translation properly considers domestication while emphasizing foreignization, and that Huang's translated poems well reflect the original in form, language and meaning.Chapter Five is the reflections on Huang's translation views and strategies. It holds that Huang's translation views can enlighten and guide the young translators, but also have some limitations, which need to be further amended.Chapter Six is the conclusion of the thesis. It affirms Huang's tremendous contribution in views, strategies, and practice of poetry translation, which, doubtlessly, becomes the milestone of poetry translation, and represents the direction of poetry translation. However, owing to the differences in poetry's form and function, translator's preferences and aims, reader's appreciation levels and purposes, the strategies of poetry translation should be varied instead of only being restricted in Three Considerations at present.
