Since 1990s,the science and technology with the representation of using information technology has been developed rapidly and has achieved great achievements, which has influence human beings'all areas greatly. Learners'way of thinking, learning style thus has changed a lot. People has applied the information technology to teaching and learning process, which brought about that the learning environment, learning resources and learning styles were developing in the direction of digitization. So many learning-centered teaching model has been used in teaching, and the collaborative learning has been widely concerned. However, relevant teaching researches and practices have indicated that activities without specific desires and collaboration without any constraints could not achieve the anticipated learning outcomes. So we can promote the development of collaborative learning through the method that applying the modeling method to the collaborative learning activities design area, using relevant learning process modeling language, describing the learning process in a structural way, and producing a collaboration script which can be explained and implemented by the computer to promote the development of collaborative learning.This paper begins by describing concepts of the field of modeling, illustrating and analyzing the instructional model. Then it elaborates the concepts, characteristics and significance of instructional design, learning design and activity modeling, and describes the relationship between them.The following part elaborates the content and characteristics of the educational modeling language, and go into detail about IMS LD specification (IMS Learning Design specification), which developed from the Netherlands Open University's EML, a kind of educational modeling language, including its development background, conceptual model, levels, learning unit, informational model. Then it compares IMS LD specification with other standards, and explains how to generate learning design in the IMS LD specification.Based on the understanding of related concepts, as well as the summary of the research results and application of the IMS LD specification, the chapter IV of this paper analyzes the collaborative learning on the basis of the preceding analysis summary and the revelation of relevant theory, and then constructs the process model of collaborative learning, furthermore, form the activity-centered perspective, it adopts some learning design tools as the external editing environment of the modeling and design of collaboration learning, and organizes the collaboration learning activities with flow, achieves the formal description of collaborative learning, to promote the development of collaborative learning and improve its quality, to promote the development of instructional design automation.
