Long before the launch of euro there had been heated debates about the prospect of euro's challenge to the dollar-centered international monetary system. Some scholars think that euro would gain equal status with dollar quickly; others think that dollar's status wouldn't be shaken by euro. After 10 years what status are euro and dollar in? How the current situations are explained? Will current sovereign debt crisis weaken euro's strength to challenge dollar? What can we learn for RMB internationalization? The dissertation tries to answer the above questions. The current euro's status compared with dollar is examined from the perspective of anchor currency, FX market depth and reserve currency. Statistical data show that euro doesn't gain equal status with dollar and dollar is still the dominant international currency. The inertia of international monetary system and euro's institutional deficiency are the main reasons. Sovereign debt crisis results from the bad co-ordination between fiscal and monetary policies and the rigid monetary policies focusing on inflation only. From the historic perspective sovereign debt crisis could become an opportunity for euro's reform. If the crisis pushed the EU nations to enhance the political cooperation among them and euro's institutional deficiency was overcome economic size would strengthen euro's challenge to dollar's dominant role. The rise of euro will facilitate overcoming the inertia of dollar-centered international monetary system and do good to RMB internationalization. From euro's experiences the success of RMB internationalization relies on stable and continual economic growth and political guarantee.
