PrefaceChronic fatigue Syndrome(CFS) is defined by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) in 1988, which is an illness characterized with unknown fatigue persisting or relapsing for six months or longer. It has been widely reasearched by many countries such as American, U.K., Australia and Japan. There are no effective treatment methods now because of its unclear etiology and pathogenesis. So it is important to study the disease according to Chinese Medicine Theory and look for effective therapies of herbs. The study discusses the features and differences of symptoms , TCM Syndrome in two surveys and regularity of prognosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome by follow up some patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The paper includes two parts: theoretical study and clinical study.1 Theoretical studyl.lFeatures and correlation of symptoms in patients with CFSCFS is characterized with asthenic fatigue. In addition, there are variety symptoms such as some psychiatric disorder and cognitive disturbance in patients with CFS. And there is a correlation in these symptoms.1.2 The prognosis of CFSSome interventions have proved to can improve symptoms and physical function of patient with CFS . But the effect has not been confirming. The findings of studies that follow up some patients with CFS for some periods show that complete recovery is rare although many people with CFS experience improvements over time. Also, a substantial minority of patients worsens over time. There is difference in the prognosis between children and adult patients with CFS. Some investigations show that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in children and adolescents may result in persistent somatic symptoms and disability in a minority of those affected. Severe fatigue states in children can cause serious and long lasting handicap but most children recover. The prognosis for CFS in adults appears to be poor, as the majority of participants remained functionally impaired over time and were unemployed at follow-up, despite the noted improvements.Consistently reported risk factors for poor prognosis are older age, poor physical function on illness onset and so on.1.3 Concept of CFS according to TCMSome diseases' etiology, Pathogenesis and symptoms described in TCM literatures are similar to CFS although we cannot find a exact same disease name for CFS in Chinese Medicine. Many investors believe that CFS is the result of function of the heart, liver, spleen and kidney and disharmony between Qi, blood, Yin and Yang due to weakness of constitution, invading of exogenouspathogenic factors, emotional stress, physical or mental overwork and irregular or improper diet. Disorder of function between liver and spleen is regarded to play an important role in CFS.2 Clinic studyThe part was studied wich is divided into three aspects, namely, symptoms, TCM syndrome, prognosis on patients with CFS by retrospecting patients of CFS who were surveyed from 1997 to 2001.2.1 Study on features and differences of Symptoms of CFS in two surveysThe syndromes, which are included in this study are two parts: the symptoms according to the definition of CFS in 1994 by CDC and the symptoms of TCM.The study shows that the major symptoms of CFS are fatigue, sleep disorder, the faculty of memory declination, concentration difficulty, headache, muscle pain, arthralgia. The minority syndrome of CFS is lymph node tumefaction. The major symptoms of TCM are vexation, sallow complexion, sensation of oppression in the chest, depression, abdominal distention. And the frequency of some symptoms is rare, such as darkness around the orbid, pale complexion, night sweating, dry stool and loose stool alternated, chest pain, swollen, nauseated, vomiting, cough and asthma, scanty dark urine and so on.The frequency and severity of some symptoms of CFS and TCM is reduced in this survey. But there are more symptoms that are belonged to deficiency of Yin in this survey than in the first survey. The study shows that the fatigue of CFS is associa...
