Objective: To reveal the influence on the cholinergic neurons in hippocampus area of animal models of Alzheimer's Disease by electro-acupuncture, discuss the act of NGF in this influence, and develop the mechnism of electro-acupuncture on it.Methods: The senile SD rats were taken as the researching subjects, and AD model was built by cutting off the fhnbria of the hippocampus. Acupoints like "Baihui"(Du20) , " Yongquan"(KIl) , " Xuehai"(SP10) , "Taixi"(KI3) were electro-punctured according to the therapeutic princile of "Tonifying Kidney and promoting blood circulation, Reviving brain and inducing resuscitation". The effects on improving the study and memory ability of AD model rats was observed, and the regulating effects on NGF in hippocampus, and choline acetyltranseferase in septum, were detected by using radio-immunoassay and immuno-histo-chemical method, which treated by electro-acupuncture.Result: The activities of ChAT in septum of the rats were reduced obviously after cutting off the fimbria of the hippocampus, meanwhile accompanied with the disorders of learning and memory. Electro-acupuncture could promote the learning and memory abilities of AD model rats , improve the producing of NGF in hippocampus and the activities of ChAT in septum. Conclusion: Electro-acupuncture could improve the learning and memory of model AD rats, and its mechanism may be that acupuncture could make the endogenous NGF in hippocampus produced, encourage the activities of ChAT in septum. Which could nourish and protect the cholinergic neurons in hippocampus.
