Professor Liu ShenLin summarized a series of unique academic idea and description experience to treat gastrointestinal carcinoma by using traditional Chinese medicine in his clinical practice. He succeeded in exploring an effective treatment principle according to differentiation. This doctoral thesis was based on all the learning when I attended on the professor Liu in the clinic. It was mainly focused on the treatment principle as well as etiology, formula and prescription. By reviewing his theory and experience simultaneously, this thesis tried to demonstrate professor Liu's academic thought in treating gastrointestinal carcinoma in a deep level. The article first reviewed the general knowledge of the gastrointestinal carcinoma according to traditional Chinese medicine and modern science. In order to promote the advantage and avoid disadvantage, this thesis also pointed out its own characters and problems. All these formed a strong theory basis for clinical work. Professor Liu regarded the deficiency as first aspect and excess as second aspect. The Qi was deficient first, stagnation was induced successively and carcinoma was formed at last. The tumor had its specialty in pathogenesis. The 'carcinoma toxin' made it more difficult to cure the disease. The conflict between antipathogenic and pathogenic Qi, deficiency and excess, general and local run the whole process of tumor and affected the treatment principle. Professor Liu emphasized the strengthen spleen and stomach Qi to facilitate antipathogenic Qi and dispel pathogenic Qi. He advocated promoting the circulation of Qi, resolving the stagnation and dampness. He firmly opposed using biter and cold herbs to eliminate heat and resolve toxin blindly. He advocated using warm and cold herbs in the complicated cases. Following the modern science as well as keeping up with TCM in differentiation and treatment of common syndromes were two important principles in his clinical practice. At the end of thesis, there were some experiences in how to selecting herbs to treat gastrointestinal carcinoma and two case report and analyses. All these tried to reflect Professor LiuShenLin's academic idea in a practical manner.
