Cough is a common symptom of respiratory system diseases. It can be caused by infection, physics and chemistry factors or allergy. Among all these factors, virus infection in upper respiratory tract is the most familiar pathogeny. Virus infection in upper respiratory tract includes flu and ordinary cold, etc. Its common symptoms are fever, pain, running at the nose and cough. Fever and some other symptoms will disappear after therapy, while cough will last for a long time and is difficult to cure. There are several mechanisms of this symptom, among which airway hyperresponsiveness caused by virus infection is one of the most important. Plenty of clinical experience has been accumulated in the therapy of exopathy with Chinese medicine, which has many advantages. This study concentrates on and investigates the cough after virus infection based on former work in this area. This study reviewed the diagnosis, treatment, cause and pathogenesis of cough affected by exopathogen according to the basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine. It also looked back the literature to study the mechanism and effect of different drugs about the cough affinity to airway high reaction. In the clinical study, we analyzed 90 cases. We grouped the patients and observed the curative effect of the way using lung ventilated medicines plus cupping. In the end, we compared this curative effect with the effect of Keyu Syrup. The result showed, the way using lung ventilated medicines plus cupping the Beishu points is better than the western medicine Keyu Syrup. After analyzing the cause and mechanism of the cough after virus infection in Chinese medicine theory, we conclude that it is included in exopathic disease. The cause of the cough is nearly the wind. Clinical manifestation also showed the relation between the disease and wind. The mechanism of the disease is wind-cold pathogen tightening the lung and the following impairment of purifying and descending function of the lung. The mechanism of Chinese medicine to meliorate the symptoms is probably related to its effect to the Airway high reaction.
