Pulsatilla millefolium(Heucsl. et Wils.)Ulbr. belongs to pulsatilla Ranunculaceae. It is also called Xiao bai tou weng, and it possesses the efficacy of heat-clearing and detoxicating and cooling blood to stop diarrhea. Some people use it as Pulsatilla chinensis. The researches on its chemical constituents are not reported by now.The first part of this dissertation surveyed the chemical and bioactivities on pulsatilla plants. Pulsatilla is a large genus of c. 60 species, distributed mainly all over Europe and Asia. There are 11 species in our country. Some pulsatilla plants' root and rhizome can be used as traditional Chinese drug. The researches on chemical constitunents of pulsatilla plants began at 1960s, mainly containing triterpenoid saponins, triterpenic acids, lidnanoids, lactones, daucosterol, glycoproteins. Triterpenoid saponins can be extracted by methanol or ethanol, and separated by silica gel column chromatography and reverse phase chromatography. Structure determination of triterpenoid saponins is based on the chemical methods and spectral evidences especial 1D and 2D NMR techniques. The second part of this dissertation reported the chemical study on Pulsatilla millefolium(Heucsl.et Wils.)Ulbr. We depurated methanolic extracts of herbs through solvent extraction and obtained I and II tow parts. Separated by silica gel dry column chromatography, D101 macroporous adsorptive resins column chromatography, sephadex column chromatography, reverse phase chromatography and preparation thin-layer chromatography, 5 compounds were isolated form it. By chemical methods and spectral evidences, they are identified as oleanolic acid, isorhamnetin, quercetin, loganic acid and anhuienosides E.
